On a more contemporary note, there is also the famous Perugina chocolate factory, with tours available daily.

Climate

Perugia is located in the central part of Italy and enjoys a traditional Mediterranean climate, with cold winters and hot  summers. In the summer, highs average around 78 degrees, and since Perugia is at a high altitude, it cools down considerably at night. We recommend artists in residence make note of the season and weather in which they are attending, and be sure to pack accordingly. Highs in winter can get up to the mid 40’s, and the overnight lows can dip into the low to mid 30’s.

The landscape, characterized by the relaxing, intense green of the surrounding vegetation. The views feature a wide area of plains out to the west in the Umbra and Tiber Valleys, which are framed by hills, and with pure mountain vistas to the east of the city.  In this panorama of changing vibrant colors, including lush woodland, many villages stand on hilltops, overlooking the plains below.  Plain air painters are encouraged to take advantage of this lush opportunity.

“The beauty, the history, and the mystical atmosphere of Perugia immediately sparkled my imagination and inspired me to create a four-part piece – a quadriptych. Each panel on paper is influenced and dedicated to a specific part of the town and also to the architectural elements in which Perugia is full of. Every panel has its own name and all four I titled “PERUGIA”, so there is “Corso”, “piazzas, arcs and stairs” , “via”, and “gates”. My inspiration came from the intricate web of streets all bounded by arcs and gates, passages and squares. All of it reminds me of a organism that I see in a micro and also macro scale, this analogy of a living thing and architecture is very much related to my overall artistic philosophy. I would also very much like to thank the city and everybody involved for inviting me here and giving me this amazing opportunity to experience Perugia and everything else that beautiful Perugia has to offer!” – Mariusz Navratil
